Spontaneous applications aren’t common in Hollywood, but Jeff Kober had a feeling he needed to act on. This instinct has brought him significant recognition in his 40-year career.
It’s not every day an actor campaigns for their own Emmy nomination, but Jeff Kober took the chance—and it’s paying off. With more than four decades of experience in the entertainment industry, he knows how things work in this field.
The former star of “General Hospital” recently appeared in the critically acclaimed series “The Pitt,” where he portrayed mechanic Duke Ekins alongside Noah Wyle, who served as the lead actor, executive producer, director, and writer of the series. Kober featured in six episodes this season.
The emotional depth he brought to a storyline connected to Wyle’s character earned him his very first nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award in the “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series” category. Although HBO opted not to submit his name in this category, his performance clearly resonated with the voters regardless.
“There are so many great performances in this series, and they can only present a limited number of nominees. But I knew this was a role I wanted to see recognized,” Kober shared in a recent interview.
He added: “I knew the script and my strengths matched perfectly, so I was really eager for it to be seen.” Even though the network chose not to submit him, Kober insists he holds no resentment.
“When I found out they wouldn’t be submitting my name, it didn’t bother me too much. I simply thought, ‘Well, what do I need to do?’ And I just followed the procedure to submit myself,” he explained.
This isn’t the first time Kober’s proactive approach has worked in his favor.
Kober reminisced about winning a Daytime Emmy in 2022 for “General Hospital,” a category for which he had also self-nominated. “You know when you do work that deserves recognition, that kind of thing,” the actor stated.
“The Pitt” has garnered significant attention this year with 25 nominations across drama categories, including one for Best Drama Series. In his own category, Kober is up against another guest star from the show, Ernest Harden Jr.
The 72-year-old actor made history as the only performer nominated for both a Primetime Emmy and a Daytime Emmy in the same year, following his nomination for a Daytime Emmy for his recent guest role on “General Hospital.”
In the meantime, Kober is already preparing for the awards ceremony in September. “I’m taking my wife. She’s going to do some shopping and pick out new outfits,” he revealed regarding his wife, Adele Slaughter.
Kober also opened up about his creative collaboration with Wyle. “You dive into that imaginary world and embrace that connection with another person. You open yourself up and show vulnerability as much as you can,” he explained.
He added: “Then, you let the relationship take its course. I was doing that on my end, and he was on his.”
Reflecting on what this nomination means to him, he confessed: “There are people in my life who have loved and supported me, and whom I’ve loved and supported, who haven’t had this chance. I feel like I can do this for them too. I really feel surrounded by love right now.”
