Martha Stewart’s Halloween post has been removed from social media following a backlash. The American lifestyle icon admitted that her initial response to the controversy fell short of addressing the public’s concerns.
What started as a simple Instagram post about Halloween took a surprising turn, reigniting discussions about homelessness, economic hardship, and the delicate line between raising awareness and trivializing serious issues.
Initially, Martha Stewart attempted to clarify her intentions and the meaning behind her post. However, in light of ongoing criticism, she later acknowledged the shortcomings of her first response more openly.

Martha Stewart’s Halloween Post Causes Outrage
In her Halloween costume, Stewart dressed as a homeless person, sporting tattered clothes and what appeared to be dirt on her face, while holding a sign that read: “I’m hungry, please help!”
The post also promoted Stewart’s candle collection sold on QVC, with a caption inviting followers to buy the “perfect for Halloween!” candles.

The association of homelessness with a Halloween costume sparked strong reactions, with many users criticizing the portrayal of homelessness as a costume choice.
One commenter expressed their disbelief: “This is so off-base, oh my God.” Another added: “Poverty is not a costume. About 35 million Americans live below the poverty line.”
An additional commenter argued, “This is just disgusting. Wow,” while another urged Stewart to be more attuned to the current social climate.

A negative outcry ensued with comments such as, “I can’t believe this is real. 😢” and “Especially in the current economic context. It’s disgusting.”
After the backlash, Stewart acknowledged that her first reaction lacked enough depth, stating how truly sorry she was.
Others, however, defended her, claiming many were overreacting. One user noted, “People are so sensitive and looking for a reason to be outraged.”
Discussion regarding the issue also carried over to Facebook, where some suggested Stewart’s intention might have been to raise awareness about homelessness.
One comment read, “She raised public awareness around this issue. It was probably her intention. I can’t imagine she acted out of cruelty.” Yet, others remained perplexed, questioning the rationale behind her costume.
Martha Stewart Responds
In response to the growing criticism, Martha Stewart addressed the issue directly on Instagram, saying, “Hello, it’s the real Martha Stewart. Just so you know…“
Stewart later posted a more detailed explanation regarding her costume’s intent. She stated, “My costume was meant to bring attention to homelessness and those suffering from hunger, and it definitely worked!!! But not in the right way, as I didn’t explain it properly, and I am truly sorry. I care about these causes and support them. Do you?“
Following this, she deleted her original Halloween photo and issued a more formal statement addressing the backlash and her views on homelessness. According to Page Six, Stewart expressed sadness over the fact that her costume might have offended some individuals.
“I am saddened that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was meant to raise public awareness about the serious issue of homelessness, may have offended some people, which was never my intention.“
Additionally, Stewart touched on the broader issue surrounding her costume, characterizing homelessness as one of the major challenges the country currently faces.
“Homelessness continues to be one of the greatest challenges and a persistent crisis in the United States, a subject that deeply concerns me, and I have devoted a lot of time and effort to support charities that address this ongoing social epidemic.“
She declared, “Determined to keep making a difference.” Stewart also expressed her enduring affection for Halloween, calling it “one of my favorite holidays of the year.“
She noted how she has spent decades teaching others to celebrate the holiday through recipes, crafts, party ideas, and organizational tips. However, her statement would not be the final word on the matter.
Stewart Makes a Second Statement
After her initial response, Stewart took to her Instagram Stories again to label the costume as inappropriate and to issue an apology.
As reported by CNN, Stewart began her second statement by acknowledging a hard truth: “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up.” She admitted that her previous response wasn’t sufficient.
“My previous statement did not go far enough. I know that many people are struggling financially. Wearing a costume like the one I wore was insensitive and not funny. I am truly sorry.“
This second statement marked a significant shift from her earlier explanations, as she focused more on the problem posed by the costume itself and genuinely apologized.
This controversy adds another chapter to a highly publicized career that has kept Stewart in the spotlight for decades. It follows a recent period where she faced persistent scrutiny over her appearance and speculation about having undergone cosmetic surgery.
During that time, Stewart was equally direct regarding what she believed to be misconceptions about herself.

Stewart Addresses Facelift Rumors
At 84, Stewart is tired of the facelift rumors and took a definitive stance to put them to rest. In a recent interview, the lifestyle mogul spoke frankly about what she’s done— and notably, what she hasn’t done—to maintain her youthful appearance.
The lifestyle icon categorically denied persistent rumors that she has undergone a facelift, telling People magazine, “Everyone keeps insisting I’ve had cosmetic surgery, but I’ve never undergone any such procedure.“

She instead credited her famously youthful appearance to a combination of healthy living, diligent skincare, and assistance from her dermatologist through non-invasive treatments.
Frustrated with the rumors, Stewart firmly reiterated her denial, stating, “I am the most honest person in the world — but if they don’t take my word for it, I don’t know what to say.“

One Notable Exception
Stewart recalled the only time a plastic surgeon worked on her face, which she defined as strictly medical repair rather than cosmetic surgery.
About ten years ago, she had a frightening accident involving one of her French Bulldogs during a snowstorm. “I leaned down in my dark kitchen to kiss my dogs before leaving,” she explained, when the startled dog “bolted” and caused her to hit her lip against a tooth.

The injury was serious, with her lip nearly split to the nose. After a grueling drive to the hospital, a plastic surgeon stitched her lip with what she remembers as 16 stitches.
“I can’t call that plastic surgery; it’s a repair!” she insisted. “You can’t see anything. I healed beautifully. That’s all a plastic surgeon has done to my face.“

Her True Secrets Revealed
Even without plastic surgery, Stewart has been open about her philosophy on aging. “I don’t think much about age, but I absolutely don’t want to look my age. And that’s why I’m really invested in it,” she shared in her podcast in February 2024.
These efforts encompass a combination of non-invasive treatments she discussed with her dermatologist, Dr. Dan Belkin.

Dr. Belkin explained that he uses fillers “very moderately” on Stewart, preferring bio-stimulants like Sculpture and Radiesse that help boost her own collagen production.
She has also undergone ultrasound skin tightening treatments like Ulthera and Softwave to enhance her skin’s elasticity.
Stewart additionally admitted that while Botox didn’t work well on her forehead—her brows would “lift in a V”—it really helped combat the hereditary “double chin” in her family.
A Holistic Approach
Beyond these procedures, Stewart maintains a healthy lifestyle, engaging in weekly Pilates, yoga, and strength training.
She credits her glowing complexion to her new skincare line, Elm Biosciences, proudly showing a recent unretouched selfie as proof.
“You don’t see scars or wrinkles. I mean, my skin has virtually no imperfections.” she shared. “These products really work.“
Ultimately, even though Stewart firmly asserts she hasn’t undergone surgery for a facelift, she embraces a thoughtful and modern approach to aging. As Dr. Belkin pointed out, her appearance is the result of “minimally invasive care done over a long period very thoughtfully and excellently.“
