Prince Harry and Meghan Move to a Separate Property on a Friend’s Estate in the Cotswolds – Their Family Situation Sparks Questions

Meghan Markle is currently facing a family challenge involving her estranged father, but there’s another pressing matter in the UK: as the Duchess and Prince Harry embark on a new chapter in their lives, concerns about their children’s future are rising.

According to The Sun, Thomas Markle, Meghan’s 82-year-old father, was moved to a memory care facility in Florida on November 1. This move follows his son, Thomas Markle Jr., handing over documents found among their father’s belongings to investigators.

Authorities are investigating two separate discoveries of child sexual abuse images: one found in the Philippines and the other in a storage unit near Thomas Markle’s previous home in Rosarito, Mexico.

These accusations raise questions about the investigators’ ability to question him effectively. Florida attorney Spencer Kuvin informed The Sun that Thomas Markle’s dementia diagnosis could complicate any attempts by the FBI to interrogate him.

As this family drama unfolds, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly left their primary residence in the Cotswolds to move into another property within the same estate. This seemingly minor transition takes on greater significance amidst their family’s current turmoil, especially concerning their children’s situation.

Harry and Meghan Move to Another House on a Friend’s Estate

The couple, who returned to the UK from California at the end of August, had been searching for a property with a budget of up to £10 million. However, they have now moved into a home belonging to a wealthy entrepreneur in the Cotswolds, where they had been staying since arriving in Britain, initially occupying his main residence.

A friend of the businessman told the magazine, “They were living in the main house. They have now moved into a property on the estate.”

The businessman reportedly formed a friendship with Harry through their mutual interest in military charities and is delighted that Harry, Meghan, and their children are living on his estate. The couple moved just before their departure for their mid-term holiday in October with their children, seven-year-old Archie and five-year-old Lilibet.

Even though they have secured a new place to stay, it doesn’t quite match the permanent country home they had envisioned upon returning to Britain.

The Sussexes Had Very Specific Criteria for Their Dream Home

The Sussexes’ property search reportedly led to a detailed wish list, with privacy and space among their top concerns. Previous reports indicated that Meghan wanted a house with nine bedrooms and a cinema studio.

Harry, on the other hand, was particularly keen on having a large amount of land around the house. He desired “lots— and I mean lots— of land” without public pathways crossing the property.

This preference seemed tied to the couple’s wish to offer their children a more private upbringing, away from the scrutiny that comes with their royal ties.

They reportedly were reluctant to make a decision based solely on photos or virtual tours. A source explained that they wanted to view potential homes in person to see if they could imagine raising their children there.

“With homes, you don’t know, until you walk in, if that’s where you want to raise your kids,” noted the source. This insider also outlined some of the questions the couple might ponder when visiting a home they are interested in:

“Is this where we’ll sit in front of the fire and watch a movie? Is this the kitchen where I’ll prepare meals for the next ten years, which are critical for my child’s development?”

The search seemed equally focused on finding a family-friendly living environment as it was on acquiring a prestigious property.

Archie and Lilibet Have Already Experienced a Major School Change

Where the children will settle is particularly significant given how much their routine has shifted since the family’s return to the UK. Harry and Meghan hoped to enroll Archie and Lilibet in a new school as part of their move, but their first choice did not go as planned.

As HELLO! revealed exclusively in September, the couple withdrew their children from school after just two days. Their security team reportedly advised this decision after logistical problems, such as heavy traffic and the distance to school, made it challenging to manage safely.

“They really wanted it to work, but they had to make a tough decision as the team didn’t feel the school could guarantee operational security,” a friend of the couple stated.

The children then had to adjust to a new school, adding yet another change in a period already filled with transitions. This issue was mentioned on A Right Royal Podcast, where the hosts pointed out how quickly Archie and Lilibet’s lives had been disrupted.

Emmy Griffiths remarked, “These children are going through a real storm, aren’t they? They start at one school and then have to switch…” Andrea Caamano added, “They changed schools after just two days! All this happened within a week!”

The family’s recent relocation to another property adds to this string of changes. However, there’s no indication that Archie and Lilibet have had to switch schools once again.

Harry and Meghan Dreamed of an Outdoor Childhood for Their Kids

The criteria guiding the couple’s house hunt also provide insight into the upbringing they envision for Archie and Lilibet. An insider told the Daily Mail that academic success isn’t their primary focus; rather, they prioritize their children’s happiness in a nurturing environment.

“Academic success isn’t their priority. It’s actually right at the bottom of their list. They place great importance on a supportive environment. But above all, it’s about letting the kids enjoy the outdoors and participate in sports,” explained the source.

Harry’s own educational journey is said to have influenced this perspective. He attended Ludgrove, a preparatory school surrounded by vast green spaces during his childhood. According to this same insider, Harry and his brother, Prince William, were treated like ordinary students there, without any special treatment due to their royal status.

Those years reportedly provided Harry with comfort during challenging times in his childhood, especially before his mother, Princess Diana, passed away in 1997. The Sussexes seemingly want their children to experience something similar, with opportunities for outdoor play, sports, and a sense of belonging.

However, one part of the upcoming school routine may have caught Meghan off guard. “At the moment, Meghan is a bit surprised that there are classes on Saturdays; other than that, she’s looking forward to it,” stated a friend.

This same source indicated that both Harry and Meghan believe their move back to Britain was “the best decision for the family.” For now, the couple appears to have found another residence in the Cotswolds without committing to a permanent family home they had hoped to find.

Since Archie and Lilibet have already had to adjust to a new school and enduring several transitions since August, their new life in Britain will depend on how the family adapts to this latest change.

As noted previously, Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain in August was set to bring considerable changes for their family, with Archie and Lilibet preparing to enroll in a new school and the couple seeking a permanent countryside home.

However, their plans have also raised questions: how long will they stay? Which family members will remain in the US? And how will they manage their new life between the two countries?

The Sussexes Return, but Not as Active Royal Family Members

This announced move does not mean Harry and Meghan will resume their royal duties. According to The Sun, the Sussexes are expected to live in a private residence rather than a royal property and continue their professional and charitable activities. Harry will not receive public funds or assume any official royal functions while residing in Britain.

Plans for the couple appear to have been in the works for some time. According to reports, Harry and Meghan met King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove in July without informing Charles of their intentions; the king reportedly learned the news only four days before it was made public.

Harry has also been spotted in Washington, D.C. since the announcement of this move. As per HELLO!’s coverage, he appeared in good spirits while participating in a roundtable dedicated to veterans.

While this return may bring the family closer to the UK, not all of Harry and Meghan’s close family members will be moving with them.

The Family Member Who Won’t Be Moving with Harry and Meghan

Insiders have revealed to TMZ that Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, will remain in California despite her close ties to Meghan, Harry, and their children.

Doria owns a home near Los Angeles and has established a life there that she is reportedly not ready to leave behind. She is also very active in the local yoga community and has friends in the area.

This choice may alter the daily dynamic of the family. Doria often drove to Montecito to visit Meghan, Harry, and the children and even had her own accommodations in their expansive home.

She is expected to continue visiting the family, though it remains unclear where those visits will take place. The Sussexes’ return to Britain is also likely to be temporary, though the exact duration of their stay is uncertain.

An insider told TMZ that it’s unclear whether the stay will last six months, a year, or beyond, as decisions are being made “on a day-to-day basis.”

Doria’s decision to stay in California isn’t the only surprising detail surrounding this move.

And then there’s the question of money

An article from Page Six indicates Harry and Meghan are facing a challenging financial situation. “I’m sure there are many reasons for this move, but I honestly think money plays a significant role,” a source stated.

That doesn’t mean the couple is broke. One source emphasized, “They are not short on cash,” while another highlighted the fortune Harry inherited, saying, “They had more money than most people even before Megxit!”

The issue, according to the article, lies in the exorbitant costs associated with maintaining their lifestyle. Harry and Meghan have two mortgages on their $14.5 million Montecito mansion and expenses for household staff, as well as a vacation home in Portugal. Their security costs are also estimated at approximately $3 million per year. As one source remarked, “Everything that comes in goes right back out.”

This makes the move particularly intriguing, as Harry and Meghan don’t appear to want to completely abandon their American life in California.

Montecito Isn’t Leaving Just Yet

This expansive property boasts nine bedrooms and sixteen bathrooms spanning nearly 18,000 square feet, also featuring rose gardens, century-old olive trees, a tennis court, a tea house, a playhouse for the children, and a swimming pool, alongside a guest house with two bedrooms.

This financial explanation is particularly interesting. The Sussexes may be preparing to spend more time in Britain without fully relinquishing the expensive American lifestyle they have led for years.

Their business interests also explain why their ties to the United States are unlikely to fade anytime soon.

Harry and Meghan Still Have Professional Ties in the U.S.

Archewell Productions, which Harry and Meghan launched in 2020, initially focused on producing scripted and unscripted series and films. According to Variety, the company’s operations have since diminished, with the label primarily serving as a platform for Meghan’s “As Ever” brand.

The couple’s relationship with Netflix has also come under scrutiny. In a March 2026 article from Variety about their partnership with Netflix, a source described the atmosphere at the company as, “It’s over.”

However, the deal remains intact. In May 2026, the magazine reported that Harry and Meghan were working on a film adaptation for Netflix of No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege, a memoir detailing British Major Adam Jowett’s command of Easy Company in Afghanistan in 2006.

So, despite ongoing questions regarding their entertainment ventures, the couple still has projects underway. Their professional lives are expected to span both sides of the Atlantic. Meghan is set to continue leading As Ever from the couple’s international bases, while Harry should dedicate more time to his charitable initiatives in the UK.

He was already scheduled to be in Britain in September for events related to WellChild and the Invictus Games.

Although their professional activities in the U.S. might keep the Sussexes connected to America, spending more time in Britain also revives a practical concern that Harry has faced for years: ensuring his family’s safety.

Security Could Complicate Their Return

Harry has repeatedly asserted that he wouldn’t feel safe bringing Meghan and their kids back to the UK without adequate protection. After losing a legal battle regarding his security measures, he reportedly told the Sun: “I don’t see how I could bring my wife and children back to the UK at this time.”

However, the family is now preparing to spend an extended period there. Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, Archie, and Lilibet have already visited Britain without armed taxpayer-funded police escorts.

It’s still unclear what security measures will be implemented for the family during this stay. But the change is striking. A concern that Harry once described as a reason for not being able to bring his family is now part of an initiative that could see them residing in Britain for months.

This Move Comes After Years of Family Tensions

Relations between Harry and Meghan and the royal family have remained complicated since their departure. Harry has previously described his return to Britain as emotionally challenging. In the Apple TV+ documentary from 2021, The Me You Can’t See, he stated:

“For most of my life, I’ve always felt anxious, worried, a little tense and wound up whenever I flew back to the UK. For me, London is a trigger because of what happened to my mother.”

The couple later shared their experiences with the royal family and the British press in their Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan.

Harry described his departure to North America as a “flight to freedom.” By the time he published Spare, many of the family’s private disagreements had already become public.

In his memoir, he recounted a dispute he had in 2019 with his brother, Prince William, after William allegedly criticized Meghan. Harry stated that William referred to Meghan as:

“difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive.”

Harry claimed that the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, writing that William “grabbed me by the collar, ripped my necklace and… knocked me to the floor.” He also described landing on a dog bowl, which broke and injured his back.

This account became one of the most discussed passages of Spare, although it remains Harry’s version of the purported altercation.
