Fans gathered in Minnesota expecting to enjoy an evening filled with Lionel Richie’s greatest hits had an experience they never anticipated.
Shortly after kicking off his latest tour, fans witnessed Richie struggle during his performance before abruptly exiting backstage. Videos from the concert, an ambulance ride, and updates about his health have now clarified what transpired afterward.
The singer was eager to keep entertaining the crowd, but footage revealed that something was off long before the audience learned he had been taken to the hospital.

A Long-Awaited Tour Had Just Begun
Richie recently teamed up with Earth, Wind & Fire for the “Sing A Song All Night Long” tour, featuring 26 dates across North America. The tour kicked off on June 24 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is set to conclude on August 14 in Austin, Texas. The two groups had performed together earlier in 2023 and extended their collaboration into 2024, attracting enthusiastic crowds and earning rave reviews.
Produced by Live Nation, the tour is making stops in major cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Atlanta, and San Francisco. According to Parade, these concerts are being billed as a reunion of two legendary acts.

For Richie, this tour represents a significant milestone in his decades-long career. As reported by Live Nation, the Oscar-winner and four-time Grammy recipient has sold over 125 million albums worldwide, is a judge on American Idol, and recently released his memoir, Truly, in September 2025, which became a New York Times bestseller.
However, right from the first night of this tour, fans noticed something was off.

“It’s a Bad Sign”: Videos Captured an Unusual Moment
On June 25 at the Grand Casino Arena, Richie suddenly appeared unable to continue performing as he usually would. During “Dancing on the Ceiling,” typically one of his most energetic songs, the singer sat on a platform while continuing to sing.
He joked with the audience about the situation while acknowledging that it was an experience he hadn’t encountered before. “Here’s what I’ve learned over my years in the business: when you feel overwhelmed, sit down, [expletive]. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! And when you feel weird, put your [expletive] on the floor.”

He continued, “Well, I want you to know that this is the first time in the history of ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ that I’ve sung it sitting down. It’s a bad sign. It’s a bad sign, guys.”
Music critic Jon Bream, who attended the concert, later noted in a social media post that Richie, who felt “dizzy” and “weird,” sat down while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling” during the opening night at the Grand Casino Arena.

The Show Ended Abruptly
Fans quickly realized the concert would not continue. Richie’s saxophonist, Dino Soldo, then addressed the audience. “Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well. He won’t be able to continue the show, and we will keep you updated as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding. It was great. Safe travels home, everyone. Thank you. Thank you very much.”

According to TMZ, paramedics took Richie backstage shortly after. Sources close to the singer reported to the site that he had been transported by ambulance to a hospital, although this was characterized as a precautionary measure.
At that moment, his condition remained uncertain.
Doctors Advised Rest as Fans Finally Received Updates
Worried fans didn’t have to wait long for more information. The United Center later announced that the concert scheduled for June 26 in Chicago had been postponed, as doctors had advised Richie to rest and recover.
The venue also clarified that the tour is expected to resume as soon as he returns to health. While representatives did not disclose the cause of the incident, the announcement reassured many fans who feared something more serious had occurred.
Fans Acknowledged the Videos Were Hard to Watch
As clips from the concert circulated online, social media users expressed their concerns in the comment sections.

Someone noted, “He handled it well; he realized something was wrong.” Another commenter stated, “I can’t watch this; he’s one of my favorite artists.” A third user suggested, “I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s generally fatigued and dehydrated, and he might be coming down with something suddenly. He is 77, and touring takes a toll on an artist.”
In another clip, other attendees expressed their anxiety as they awaited updates. A fan asked, “I was in the audience, [sic] is there any news? I’m really worried.” Another commenter said, “I’m feeling dizzy just watching this. There’s too much going on with the lights, effects, etc. [sic].” A third remarked, “This is too scary.” SCREENSHOT OF COMMENTS
Richie Once Feared He’d Lose His Voice Forever
This recent scare also reminded some fans of another frightening episode in Richie’s life. In the 1990s, he developed a mysterious illness affecting his vocal cords and underwent four separate surgeries before doctors determined that the issue was related to acid reflux from his diet.
In an interview with People, the singer later recounted that time as being “close to a nervous breakdown,” fearing he might never sing again. “You don’t want anyone to come mess with that. It’s your identity,” Richie explained, adding, “I never really thought it would end like this.”
For now, fans seem relieved that Richie was hospitalized for precautionary reasons and advised to rest, while many await confirmation on when the “Sing A Song All Night Long” tour will resume.
